The Freelance Copywriter Directory Online is the brainchild of Bob Bly, a freelance copywriter with three decades of copywriting experience. McGraw-Hill calls Bob Bly "America's top copywriter," and he was AWAI's 2007 Copywriter of the Year. He is the author of 75 books including The Copywriter's Handbook (Henry Holt).

"With so many new - and relatively inexperienced - freelance copywriters entering the market, finding the few freelance copywriters with the experience to handle your job successfully is like searching for a needle in the proverbial haystack," says Bly. "With, marketers can quickly and easily get access to my 'short list' of the freelance copywriters I'd recommend to them."

Why would Bly, a freelance copywriter, create a web site that points potential copywriting clients to his competitors? "My capacity is limited and I can handle only a small fraction of the freelance copywriting projects I am offered," he says. "This site enables me to efficiently refer marketers to other qualified freelance copywriters rather than turn them down flat or leave them in the hands of untrained amateurs."

The listing of copywriters is divided into two sections. The first, Freelance Copywriters, lists mainly copywriters Bob knows personally and whose work he can vouch for, though he makes no money from referring them to you and therefore is not responsible for managing your relationship with them. Most of these are senior copywriters, but the list includes a few newer copywriters who deliver quality work.

The second listing, Cheap Copywriters, contains links to a few of the most popular online job bidding sites where you can hire freelance copywriters at a tiny fraction of what the copywriters in the first section charge. However, Bob does not recommend these. "I never recommend cheap copywriters, because there is no such thing," he explains. "If cheap copywriters wrote copy that actually worked, they wouldn't need to charge cheap fees," he explains. "Hire a copywriter from this section at your peril and against my best advice."

The third section lists some training programs for clients who want to learn to write their own copy. If you have the time, talent, and temperment to do it yourself, this is a far better option than the Cheap Copywriters resources, and can be more economical than  hiring an expensive pro.
